The United Way of Becker County was established on November 22, 1983 by a group of area business people and citizens in response to the need for funding for area organizations. The philosophy of the group was that a single, multifaceted fundraising approach that involved businesses, employees, and citizens could be best be accomplished as a coordinated effort to the benefit of area agencies.
Our first campaign year was 1984. The Residential Drive generated the primary source of income. Wayne Benson served as the chairperson for community door-knocking efforts.
In 1988, our first Employee Drive was held with a goal of $63,000. Since then, our annual goal has increased each year. In 2010, the annual goal was $222,000.
In the beginning, United Way of Becker County funding campaigns provided support to just nine community agencies. In 2010, contributions to the United Way helped 36 different agencies provide needed resources and services to residents of Becker County.
Over the past 26 years, hundreds of United Way volunteers have assisted in raising more than $3,500,000. Of every dollar raised, 99 cents stays in Becker County. The administrative budget accounts for less than 10%, demonstrating that United Way of Becker County is committed to fiscal responsibility as well as ensuring that donor funds are put to the best use possible.
